Rule 1 of 6

Rug Size to Room Size

A common rule of thumb leaves roughly 18 in of bare floor between the rug and the wall on the main sides of the room, and puts at least the front legs of every seating piece on the rug.

Measured flat along the floor, in inches. These are not heights, so they are not laid against the standing figure.

The rule

A common rule of thumb leaves roughly 18 in of bare floor between the rug and the wall on the main sides of the room, and puts at least the front legs of every seating piece on the rug.

This is a common rule of thumb out of decorating practice. It is not a standard, it is not a requirement, and nobody publishes it as one. What follows is where the number comes from, so you can disagree with it on the arithmetic rather than on taste.

The measurement it needs

The room wall to wall in both directions, and the outer footprint of the seating group. Both in inches.

How to take it: Measure the Floor

The arithmetic

5 steps, and each one is a number you can check.

  1. Start with the room. Measure wall to wall in both directions and write both numbers down in inches, not feet — a 12 by 15 ft room is 144 by 180 in.
  2. Take 18 in off each of the two opposing walls you want the border on. That is 36 in total, so 144 by 180 in becomes a target rug of about 108 by 144 in, which is 9 by 12 ft.
  3. Now check the furniture instead of the walls, because the walls are not what people look at. Measure the outer footprint of the seating group — sofa to opposite chair, arm to arm — and add 8 to 12 in on each side so the front legs land comfortably rather than on the hem.
  4. Take the smaller of the two answers. The border rule sets a ceiling; the furniture rule sets a floor. If the furniture answer is larger than the border answer, the seating group is too big for the room and no rug will fix that.
  5. Round down to a size that is actually made. Rugs come in a short list of footprints, and the arithmetic almost never lands on one of them exactly.

Where the catalog falls short

This catalog carries four small footprints, a block of 5 by 7 rugs, and two 8 by 10 rugs. Nothing between 5 by 7 and 8 by 10 exists here at all.

10 of 10 listings state a size, from 36 in to 120 in.

The two sizes most living rooms land on after the arithmetic — 6 by 9 and 9 by 12 — are not in this catalog. A 12 by 15 ft room works out to about 9 by 12, and the largest thing here is 8 by 10, which is one step short. That is not a compromise we can make disappear by describing the 8 by 10 more warmly. If your arithmetic says 9 by 12, the honest answer is that this catalog does not have it.

Three things to keep in view

  • This is decorating practice, not a standard or a requirement. Nobody publishes a rule that says 18 in.
  • Keep rug edges out of the line people walk, and use a pad on a smooth floor.
  • Where a listing says non-slip, that is the seller’s word and not a measurement.

Sizes in the catalog this rule can be applied to

5 listings from Area Rugs & Runners whose stated figure can be put against the arithmetic above. Whether any of them suits your room is a question this page cannot answer, because it depends on numbers only you have.

Only low-pile 8 by 10

Soalmost Washable Area Rug, 8 x 10 ft

Soalmost Washable Area Rug, 8 x 10 ft

Two rugs here state 8 by 10 ft. This is the only one whose listing also states low pile.

Eight by ten is the size at which a rug stops being an object on the floor and starts being the floor. The listing states a low pile that folds and is light enough to move, which is the practical difference between an 8 by 10 and a rolled carpet. Ninety-six by one hundred and twenty inches is a lot of rug to get through a doorway.

The listing states
vintage non-slip, stain resistant, low pile, foldable and lightweight.
Best for
A seating group you want sitting entirely on one rug.

What works

  • Ninety-six by one hundred and twenty inches, the larger of the two footprints this catalog carries.
  • The listing states a low pile, which is the pile a door clears and a chair leg slides over.
  • Foldable and lightweight, per the listing, which is not stated of every rug this size.
  • Stain resistant, per the listing, which is at least a claim you can hold it to.

What does not

  • The listing gives no pile height in inches, only the word low.
  • Non-slip is the seller’s word, not a measurement and not a standard.
  • A rug this size arrives folded, and the listing does not say how long the creases take to settle.

The other 8 by 10

PLHXFR Floral Area Rug, 8 x 10 ft

PLHXFR Floral Area Rug, 8 x 10 ft

Second of the two 8 by 10 ft rugs here. The listing states a vintage floral print and no pile height.

The second 8 by 10 in this catalog, and the one with a pattern busy enough to hide what a floor does to a rug. The listing states machine washable, which at ninety-six by one hundred and twenty inches is a claim about your machine as much as about the rug. Everything else it states uses the same vocabulary as the rest of the category.

The listing states
machine washable, non slip, stain resistant, a vintage floral print and large indoor use.
Best for
A large room where the pattern is doing the work.

What works

  • Ninety-six by one hundred and twenty inches, enough to carry a full seating group.
  • A vintage floral print, per the listing, which is the pattern that shows wear least.
  • The listing states machine washable rather than spot clean.
  • Stain resistant, per the listing.

What does not

  • The listing states no pile height at all, not even a word for it.
  • Non slip is a seller’s phrase and describes no test.
  • Machine washable at 8 by 10 assumes a machine most homes do not have.

Water repellent, as stated

RELEANY Washable Area Rug, 5 x 7 ft

RELEANY Washable Area Rug, 5 x 7 ft

The only 5 by 7 here whose listing states water repellent. The other three state stain resistant only.

Sixty by eighty-four inches is the size most people buy and the size most living rooms are one step too big for. This is the only 5 by 7 here whose listing states water repellent rather than only stain resistant, which is a different claim about a different problem. The print is a vintage floral.

The listing states
non-slip, water repellent, pet friendly and a vintage floral print.
Best for
A front-legs-on arrangement in a room around 11 by 13 ft.

What works

  • Sixty by eighty-four inches carries the front legs of a sofa and one chair, which is the honest job of a 5 by 7.
  • Water repellent, per the listing, which is a claim about liquid rather than about marks.
  • Pet friendly is stated, which usually describes how the surface takes claws.
  • A floral print hides the traffic lane that forms in front of a sofa.

What does not

  • A 5 by 7 leaves the back legs of most sofas on bare floor.
  • The listing gives no pile height and no thickness.
  • Non-slip is the seller’s word, and a pad is a separate purchase.

Only 4 by 6

CHAMPLANT Vintage Area Rug, 4 x 6 ft

CHAMPLANT Vintage Area Rug, 4 x 6 ft

The only rug here whose listing states 4 by 6 ft.

Forty-eight by seventy-two inches. This is a size that sits in front of a sofa without reaching it, which is a real use as long as you know that is what you are buying. The listing states thin and foldable, which is the honest description of a rug that ships in a small box.

The listing states
a washable thin foldable rug that is non slip, with a distressed floral print.
Best for
A coffee-table island, with the furniture legs off the rug.

What works

  • Forty-eight by seventy-two inches works as a defined patch rather than a room-sized layer.
  • The listing states thin, which is more specific than low pile.
  • Foldable, per the listing, so it ships and stores without a roll.
  • A distressed print hides marks better than a flat color.

What does not

  • Seventy-two inches on the long side will not reach the legs of a standard sofa.
  • Thin is stated as a word, not as a thickness in inches.
  • Non slip is the seller’s claim.

Only runner

Boho Washable Runner Rug, 2 x 6 ft

Boho Washable Runner Rug, 2 x 6 ft

The only rug here whose listing states a runner shape, at 24 by 72 in.

The only rug listing in this catalog that gives its size in inches without being asked: twenty-four by seventy-two. That is a runner, which is a shape rather than a size, and it belongs in a corridor or along the working side of a room. Low pile and foldable, per the listing.

The listing states
24 x 72 in, low pile, non slip, stain resistant and foldable.
Best for
A hallway, or the walking lane beside a seating group.

What works

  • Twenty-four by seventy-two inches is stated in inches on the listing, which is rare here.
  • Low pile, per the listing, which is what a corridor needs under a door.
  • Foldable and stain resistant, per the listing.
  • A runner is the one rug shape that does not compete with a seating group.

What does not

  • Twenty-four inches wide is too narrow to sit under any furniture leg.
  • A runner in a walking lane is exactly the rug whose ends lift.
  • Non slip is the seller’s word and describes no test.
